We see them all over the place; in television advertisements, in magazines, and on the runway. They are the beautiful men and women who strut their stuff while showing off the latest styles from the hottest fashion designers. These are the fashion models of today and tomorrow, and the subject of high fashion photography. It is through photography that these models and fashionable clothing are brought to the public. Therefore, these photographs must be taken with a certain level of precision and a special attention to color, style, and lighting composition. Learning a few key fashion photography tips will help to make this possible.

High fashion photographers such as Mario Testino and Eva Mueller may not be as famous as the models they shoot, but they are actually sought out more than their model counterparts by fashion magazines and designers. While the dream of huge paychecks and hobnobbing with the rich and famous might appeal to the aspiring fashion photographer, it is not easy to become successful in fashion and model photography. For every one talented young photographer who makes it big, there are hundreds are left dreaming about the moment their photo will be chosen.

Here are a few fashion photography tips for anyone interested in getting started in the field of fashion photography. The first thing you must do is study your subject. As with any field, you can never learn enough. Read as many fashion magazines you can possibly get your hands on. There are a number of fantastic books on the subjects of fashion and model photography available. They can be purchased cheaply online at sites like Amazon.com or even cheaper if you get them used on eBay. You will also need a good camera, a tripod, and a lighting system. One of the more often overlooked fashion photography tips, is to ensure that you always have plenty of film and extra batteries available.

One of the most important fashion photography tips to focus on is having a portfolio. You need to start assembling a portfolio of your work and you need to keep this portfolio handy at all times. You never know when you will have the opportunity to show your work off to someone in the fashion world. Sharp, vibrant images on a 4 x 5″ transparency will best show off your work, so focus on them when putting your fashion photography portfolio together. If any of your work has already been published regardless of whether it was a local magazine, newspaper or contest, add a tear sheet (literally a sheet you torn out of the magazine) is a great addition to a portfolio. You should have a minimum of 20 photographs in your portfolio and showcasing different styles.

In this day of the internet, it is wise to display your fashion photography talent online as well. Setup a simple website displaying your work and submit your digital photos to online contests. Also, submit them to online fashion gallery websites. This will help tremendously with getting your work seen and showcasing your talent around the world. Probably the most important of all the fashion photography tips is to get your photographs seen by as many people as possible. There is no better way of doing this than by putting them online.

Remember that most fashion magazine editors are looking for your personality in the photographs that you take. Each fashion photographer will captures the essence of a fashion design and model differently. Most importantly, if this is your dream, do not give up, ever! Keep learning the latest high fashion photography tips and keep working to get your photographs on the cover of my next hot fashion magazine.

Varun Sardana, an alumnus of NIFT, Delhi, has had two successful shows at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week under his belt. His debut collection garnered rave reviews from critics and the designer managed to bag the Best Debut Collection by the Fashion Design Council of India. Varun has been designing from past three years, here; he reveals some harsh realities of the Indian fashion industry.

Why fashion as profession? Since childhood I have always seen myself as a creative person. We all have a creative person within us; it’s only a matter of being aware of it. Since my young days, I have seen my grandma doing her stitching, so fabrics and fibres were always around me. Somewhere, all this inspired me and in addition to it, I always had this knack within me…. Design philosophy… I make it a point that my design philosophy evolve from one season to another. I borrow my inspiration from anywhere, but always keep in mind that the approach has to be inherent. I like to design for women who are modern, contemporary and believe in experimenting and breaking the norms or challenging themselves but without trying to shock the world. Your first break…I launched my label in 2004 and started of with my debut show at Wills India Fashion Week which gained me critical appreciation. But then for the Spring-Summer 2009 collection, I joined hands with Delhi Fashion Week followed by a shift to WLIFW in A-W 2009. Why then shifted back to WLIFW? I don’t want to comment on that…It was my personal choice and there are some ideologies which I follow and believe in, so there is no solid answer or reason behind it.

Views on the Indian fashion industry? Hmmm… I have mixed views about our fashion industry. I think one needs to find positives and negatives. Past one decade has seen an immense growth and today’s new generation of designers have access to graphics and other new technologies which help in creating better designs. They are the ones capable of capturing the global market. So where does India lack? The point which I want to put forward is that this glamorous industry is doing numerous things at a time. We should take one thing at a time. The other neglected sector is retail it needs to be addressed and is still at an unorganized stage. At this nascent stage, we should not compare ourselves with the international industry. A lot of factors are to be taken into consideration before one launches a label. Though everything depends on luck and talent, unlike international designer, Indian designer have to face a lot more issues. Launching a label should be a more friendly process, if not easy. How much important is marketing when it comes to fashion? Oh… yes. Marketing is very important. But if you ask me, I would not buy the statement- ‘emphasize on tying up with people to make the brand visible’. I would rather create valuable and good quality products which I consider will be sustainable.

Designers you admire… Among the national designers, I like Arjun Saluja and Anamika Khanna a lot for the consistency in their work. Vivien Westwood, Victor & Rolf and Undercover are the ones I admire internationally. Your views regarding the whole episode of Vijay Singh’s arrest… What is the future of Indian Fashion & Design Week? I don’t want to comment on Mr Vijay Singh’s arrest as it involves some personal issues. As far as future of IFDW is concerned, from past one and half years, the people of this industry are trying to be together and deliver one fashion week. But for the upcoming season I can say there will not be one because of the brand new edition of India Men’s Week. And regarding the confusion of whether FDPC or FDCI will rule the roost, we have to wait till the dust settles down. Which fashion week are you planning to showcase your collection in the upcoming season? I am still working on my designs, have not yet decided yet. Still talks are on… so let’s wait and watch. I’ll take a call regarding it once I get to know which will be a better platform to showcase in. Before showcasing here, I’ll be presenting this collection in Paris.

It’s four going on five! In the last 45 days, India has seen as many as four fashion weeks. Be it the second string Kolkata Fashion Week which is nascent yet promising, or the debutante India Men’s Week, not forgetting the established Lakme Fashion Week and the recently culminated India Couture Week and now the fifth one beckons, the Big Daddy of them all – Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. This one is about putting ICW under a microscope. It was jinxed, many felt.

Its existence came last year at a time when FDCI saw a split with Sumeet Nair, who is now practically non existent in the fashion frat. This time around, it was postponed from July to August to September to finally in October. Next year, no one knows if it will happen. The first day stood cancelled, apparently Abu and Sandeep did not get enough passes to accommodate their guests and backed out on grounds of bias. Later a statement was released – We stand cohesively with the FDCI – at least that was heartening! Fashion critics kept insinuating that collections showcased were hardly Couture, barring a select few designers of course. Then there were a few who showed similar collections as shown in previous fashion weeks, perhaps one can’t be blamed since fashion weeks are being held too back to back to be able to churn out a new collection. But then which medical study proves that one needs to show at every ‘week’ to stay healthy? It was nice to see most designers break the bridal genre of couture in India.

Like Suneet Verma says, Indian couture is very relevant to Indian fashion, therefore it’s necessary to have a couture week in India. We are designers working in a country that has a treasure of incredible textiles, embroideries and other related crafts which enables us to do super luxe, handmade one of a kind custom made clothing this is a very unique experience compared to the west which has really become about the ready to wear and mass volume collections for most design houses. Even a Varun Bahl who had one of the most stunning collections says, I think India demands High fashion and HDIL did the smartest thing to be the first one to introduce it in India. But the sets this time were not much to talk about, were they? In my opinion the entire Grandeur was beautiful but there is always scope for improvement he politically accepts.

Another point of contention was the presence of too much Bollywood. But then how can one avoid that in the city of Mumbai? Nachiket Barve has a better reasoning, Fashion relates to lifestyle and high fashion is mostly accepted by the Bollywood crowd so even too much of Bollywood is not harmful for a Couture Week. We agree, but only to a point, beyond which it all seems like a farce! A family reunion sort of a thing where one star walks for one friend or wife or sister or whoever The Being Human show had nothing Couture, we we’ll hand it over to them for staging fashion for a good cause, how much ever un-couture the fashion may be. FDCI supremo Sunil Sethi said, It was the biggest show ever, yes as far as star power is concerned, it certainly was.

As for the buying, Kimaya’s Pradeep Hirani said, Kimaya attends 53 fashion weeks across the globe in a year, ICW is one of them. Well, ain’t much to read between the lines here, except for the fact that couture sales is individual centric and doesn’t old much relevance for volume stockers like fashion houses and designer stores. Inference: Do we need a Couture Week? Yes. Is this one serving the purpose? Partially. Is it state of the art? No. Will it happen again? Hope so!
